Given my conclusions (posted here) about viable and valid options for gay followers of Jesus Christ, what is my hope for churches in terms of how this all plays out?
My hope and prayer is simple… churches would proactively create atmospheres where no one has to hide or pretend. That churches would proactively engage with LGBT folks — both the churched and the unchurched. That churches would never compromise the basic Gospel message that God is madly in love with every person he ever created. That churches would create safe environments for gay and lesbian followers of Jesus to work through these issues and prayerfully discern what God is saying TO them. That churches would love and support and resource those who are called and gifted with celibacy; and that churches would love and support and resource those who choose to pursue marriage as an option. And that churches would challenge, teach and mentor gay and lesbians in the areas of relationships, sexual integrity, marriage, family life, parenting, etc.
That is my hope and my dream… and I deeply believe that it is on Jesus’ heart as well.
